Cindy Casterlin – Binghamton, NY

Nancy Cohen – Bethany, CT

Helen Garcia –  Santo Domingo, Rep. Dominicana (this is not a typo)

Elizabeth Miller Park – Lewiston, ME

Lillian Moss – Jamaica, NY

Emma Potik – Albany, NY

Gina Prout – Schenedctady, NY

Viola Silvan – Philmont, NY

We asked questions about expressive arts and life and came away with even more. However here are a few glimpses into a way forward that came during our last hour together, a word collective that found its way into several versions.

The three day training model has been so successful for Level II, we are changing our Level I schedule from 8 two-day weekends to 5 three-day weekends, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So many of our students come from a distance….Maine, Texas, Ohio, Dominican Republic (!) as well as NYC, Brooklyn and western Massachusetts, that require a long travel commitment, reducing the number of weekends and lengthening the session time to three days is proving to be a more attractive option.

Level I focuses on the  basic expressive arts concepts that guide our practice. These concepts have evolved over time and are the core of  the body of knowledge that is the foundation of a unique approach to the therapeutic use of the arts.  The year-long course is divided into 5 seminars of 20 hours each for a total of 100 hours of training.

We begin on Friday evening from 6 to 10 and then continue on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 5. Each seminar will have a specific frame or focus of exploration.

Weekend 1 – Exploring the art modalities and their unique properties as catalysts for personal and professional development. Time is given to discover the art modalities from the most challenging to the most resonant for each individual.

Weekend 2 – Taking a look at the basic expressive arts methods, such as intermodality, low skill- high sensitivity. learning through play and making.

Weekend 3 – Composing a philosophical framework for expressive arts through the arts. We will build our questions about the unique and rich foundations that support our work

Weekend 4 – Getting in touch with the mind-body connection and how it relates to expressive arts. What are the sensory qualities of the arts that contribute to its power?

Weekend 5 -  Giving voice to expressive arts work in the world.  We will look at how practice in the studio prepares us for bringing  expressive arts approaches into our daily life.

Springing from our belief that  the studio is a laboratory for exploration, our teaching model is a blend of experiential and didactic learning, interactive discussion and lively digging in the ground that has been turned over by the pioneers in our field. Readings from the leaders in the field will be given and discussed in class. Active on-your-feet art making will be the core learning tool of the program, giving students an entrance level understanding of how expressive arts works.

Level II – 2012-13

ADVANCED TRAINING in the EXPRESSIVE ARTS

The curriculum will focus on application of expressive arts principles and practice in specific settings, as well as deepening each participant’s understanding of core theory. The learning approach will be a comprehensive blend of didactic lecture, interactive discussion and hands-on experiential, intuitive work/play. At least one year of expressive art training or equivalent is required for admission to the program.

The lead training team will be Rebekah Windmiller and Denie Whalen.
